Gig Economy FAQs

Am I self-employed?

Yes—most gig platforms class you as self-employed, not an employee. You’re responsible for your own tax via Self Assessment.

Do I need to register?

If your gig income exceeds £1,000 per year, you must register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year.

What can I claim?

Bike repairs, fuel, phone data, delivery bags, rain gear, thermal bags, hi-vis clothing, and more. We find everything.

How do I track multiple apps?

We set you up with simple tracking. Most platforms also provide annual summaries—we reconcile them all into one clear picture.

Gig Economy Tax: Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay tax on my gig economy earnings?

Yes, if your total self-employment income exceeds £1,000 in a tax year. This applies to Deliveroo, Amazon Flex, TaskRabbit, Fiverr, and all platform-based work. You must register for Self Assessment and file an annual tax return.

What expenses can I claim as a gig worker?

Common deductions include vehicle costs or mileage, phone and data costs (business proportion), delivery equipment (bags, boxes), protective clothing, platform fees, and bicycle maintenance if you cycle. We identify every legitimate deduction.

I work for multiple platforms - do I need separate tax returns?

No. All your self-employment income goes on a single Self Assessment return. We consolidate income from all platforms, deduct your total expenses, and calculate your overall tax liability.

Do I need to pay National Insurance?

If your profits exceed £12,570, you pay Class 2 NI (£3.45/week) and Class 4 NI (6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270). These are calculated automatically as part of your Self Assessment. We include NI in all our tax calculations.

How much does gig economy tax filing cost?

Our packages start from £39/month or £199 one-off for a straightforward Self Assessment return. Multi-platform workers with higher complexity may pay more. Get an exact price at our instant quote calculator.
