Self Assessment: Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Self Assessment tax return cost?

Our Self Assessment service starts from £199 for straightforward returns. Rental income returns start from £249. We also offer monthly packages from £39/month that include Self Assessment plus year-round bookkeeping and support.

When is the deadline for filing my tax return?

The online filing deadline for the 2025/26 tax year is 31 January 2027. We strongly recommend filing between April and October to allow time for tax planning and to avoid the January rush.

What records do I need to provide?

This depends on your income sources, but typically includes: P60/P45 from employment, invoices and receipts for self-employment, rental income records, bank statements, dividend vouchers, and pension statements. We provide a clear checklist tailored to your situation.

Can you help if I have missed previous tax returns?

Yes. We regularly help clients who have missed one or more years of filing. We can prepare backdated returns, negotiate with HMRC on penalties, and get you fully up to date. The sooner you act, the lower the penalties.

Do I need to file if I earned less than the personal allowance?

If HMRC has asked you to file, you must file even if you earned below the personal allowance (£12,570). However, you may be able to request removal from Self Assessment if your circumstances have changed. We can advise on this.

What happens if I file my tax return late?

You will receive an automatic £100 penalty even if you owe no tax. After 3 months, daily penalties of £10 apply (up to £900). After 6 and 12 months, further penalties of 5% of tax owed or £300 (whichever is greater) are added.
