Private Hire Driver FAQs
❓
Mileage or actual costs?
You can claim 45p per mile (simple) OR actual vehicle costs (complex but often higher). We calculate both and recommend the best option.
❓
Do I need to register?
If you earned over £1,000 driving, yes. Register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends.
❓
What about tips?
Cash and in-app tips are taxable income. We help you track and report them correctly to avoid HMRC issues.
❓
Can I claim my phone?
Yes—the percentage used for work. If you use it 70% for driving, you can claim 70% of the cost and contract.

Private Hire Driver Tax: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to do a tax return as an Uber driver?
Yes. Private hire drivers are self-employed and must register for Self Assessment with HMRC. You need to file a tax return each year declaring your earnings and claiming allowable expenses. We handle the entire process.
What expenses can I claim as a private hire driver?
Common allowable expenses include fuel or mileage (45p per mile for first 10,000 miles), vehicle insurance, TfL licence fees, phone costs (business proportion), Uber/Bolt service fees, car cleaning, and vehicle maintenance.
Should I use the mileage rate or actual car costs?
You must choose one method and stick with it for that vehicle. The simplified mileage rate (45p/mile) is easier to track but actual costs may save more if you have high running costs. We calculate which method saves you more tax.
Do I need to register for VAT?
Only if your turnover exceeds £90,000 in any 12-month period. Uber's service fee is not your turnover — your fare income is. We monitor your earnings and advise when VAT registration becomes necessary.
