Sole Trader Accounting: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an accountant as a sole trader?
While not legally required, an accountant typically saves you more than they cost by identifying allowable expenses you might miss, ensuring compliance, and freeing your time to focus on your business. Our packages start from just £39/month.
What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?
Common allowable expenses include office costs, business travel, stock and materials, professional subscriptions, marketing, phone and internet (business proportion), and equipment. We review your situation to maximise legitimate deductions.
When do I need to file my Self Assessment?
Online Self Assessment returns for the 2025/26 tax year are due by 31 January 2027. Any tax owed must also be paid by this date. We recommend filing early to spread payments and identify planning opportunities.
Should I become a limited company instead?
Generally, forming a company becomes tax-efficient above £30,000–£40,000 profit. We provide a free assessment comparing your tax position as a sole trader versus limited company.
What is Making Tax Digital and does it affect me?
MTD for Income Tax requires sole traders with income over £50,000 to keep digital records and file quarterly updates from April 2026. The threshold drops to £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028. We handle all MTD compliance as part of our service.
How do payments on account work?
If your tax bill exceeds £1,000, HMRC requires advance payments towards next year's tax. These are two payments of 50% each, due 31 January and 31 July. We factor these into your cash flow planning so there are no surprises.
